Why Threatpost.com has been MIA at the most inconvenient time.

Threatpost.com is the first-stop platform for fast-breaking cybersecurity news, discussions, gossip, and investigations from all over the world. Threatpost.com is an information security blog that was previously owned by Kaspersky Lab until October 2017 after which it was promoted to a standalone security news platform. The platform’s award-winning best-in-class editorial team offers unique and high-quality content. The site is frequently cited by the mainstream media as a reliable and authentic source on security matters. The security blog primarily focuses on treading threats and vulnerabilities to generate industry-critical news and information that could be leveraged by organizations as the first line of defense against security breaches. These include videos, podcasts, blog posts, articles, aggregated reports, as well as whitepapers. However, its past affiliation with Kaspersky Labs raises many questions about its independence.

Lately, the security blog has registered a massive decline regarding various ranking aspects such as category rank, global rank, and global rank. For instance, Threatpost.com has witnessed decreased category ranking in computer security reporting from 196 in August 2022, to 230 in September, and 312 in October. Also, over these past three months, the platform has registered a decline in country ranking from 85,263 in August 2022, to 99,103 in September, and 130,728 in October 2022. Moreover, in those three months, the security blog registered a decline in the global ranking from 155,044 in August 2022 to 175,540 in September, and 227,660 in October 2022.

Besides, over the last three months, Threatpost.com has registered a decline in traffic and engagement. In August 2022, the total number of visits to the website was 472,100 which dropped to 403,300 in September and fell further to 307,600 in October 2022. Regarding its global coverage, the platform recorded massive declines in its major marketplaces such as the United States (23.77 percent drop), Brazil, (12.11 percent drop), India (33.35 percent drop), Canada (9.10 percent drop), Mexico (29.37 percent drop), and so on. The main reason behind all these is that, recently, security updates and other cybersecurity-related news haven’t been posted on the website. Rumors have it that their lack of posting is due to being a subsidiary of Norton involving them in the Russian-Ukraine conflict, which is true.

Following the ‘informal’ ban of Kaspersky Internet Security – for its affiliation to the Russian government – by many computer users for its alleged involvement in the Russian-Ukraine conflicts, a significant number of computers switched their allegiance to other security solutions like Bitdefender, Norton 360, Cypherdog, and Xopero among others. Particularly, Norton 360 has resolved to offer up to twenty licenses of Norton 360 Deluxe to protect up to a hundred devices in Ukraine against potential cybersecurity threats. Threatpost’s past association with Kaspersky and the ongoing engagement between the partner which the site happens to be a subsidiary of compromises the independence of the security blog. Besides, the unjustifiable, informal market takeover by Norton raises many questions regarding the authenticity of the security updates posted on the various platforms (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, official blog, etc.) of Threadpost.com These confusions have resorted to Threatpost.com being dormant for some time up to to date.
